Felt he was sincere, but regardless I’m now sincerely rooting for Jack to keep his majors record.

I thought he scored a few points and he is getting higher marks from my women friends, than from guys. Strategic placement of women in the front row and the camera mishap certainly accentuated their presence. As some radio commentators pointed out this morning, he really owes none of US an explanation or an apology….
Personally, while he addressed most of the key areas in question, I thought the Foundation and children’s charity mentions were too early in the apology and too frequent.

I was relieved when he finally exited. I thought the mea culpa was a tad too long and went astray a few times. Did Tiger really have a pass to express anger and warn off media who had hounded his wife, Tida, etc.? But he seemed sincere within the context of who he is, though one radio show host later commented that the problem is that “Tiger has the heart of a robot.”
The Wall Street Journal Weekend edition had an engaging column entitled “On the Couch” (not John Paul Newport)that is worth reading. I liked the reference about the blue backdrop drape, “looking like something purchased from the Conan O’Brien set.” The tone of the piece dwelled on how everything was staged and that Tiger was controlling the media, as he’s always done. Also, Tiger’s first public attempt at expiation comes far too late. Female fans (and friends of mine)are not inclined to be so quickly forgiving and they will feel differently about Tiger for a long time. I agree with some critics that he’ll have no shot (or credibility)for sponsorships with products where women are key purchase/decision-makers (and that includes real estate).
And maybe Tiger’s multiple lady liaisons should have been referenced in the encompassing apology to everyone he has hurt by his actions. At least three of his conquests called the speech “selfish.” However, Tiger didn’t owe me an apology when he looked into the camera and asked those of us at home to find it in our hearts one day to forgive him. Was this the height of hubris? As if my life or belief system has been damaged by an athlete’s peccant behavior! I also hope Jack’s record stands. And I hope that Tiger gets back to playing golf in the next few months.

I didn’t buy it. Looked like a guy not being true to himself or his nature, continuing to pretend to be someone he is not.

David,
True to himself and to his nature ? Pretending to be someone he’s not ? You his best pal or something ? What the fuck would you know ?

I thought it was a complete sham – with every word, every inflection and every move coldly calculated to minimize PR damage. The hug with his mother was particularly galling to be honest.
I was in Ireland last week when I saw the press conference and ironically I was in a golf club bar and the consensus there was that he was a fraud and the press conference merely exacerbated this feeling.
The manipulation of the press for this press “conference” was almost total – with a significant hats-off to the Golf Writers Association for giving him the proverbial middle finger.
Personally, I will begin to believe him when I see him step out of the cocoon and behave like a normal person – a little more humility – a little more “naturalness”.
He has been surrounded by “Yes” men for years, and if I were his wife I would make him change his complete team, up to and including Stevie Williams and Steinberg, his agent. What is the likelihood that she will let him go off with the boys (Byron Bell et al.) in the near future? Not a chance.
If I were a PGA tour pro, I would be quaking in my boots. If he can be as good as he was when the “cocoon of concentration” was such a sham – can you just imagine how good he could be if he is REALLY focused on golf and family? The mind boggles at that prospect.
